Happy Birthday Kansas!!!

I realized recently that after 4th O July, and Christmas, the next best holiday is definitely Kansas' birthday! It takes me back to my days of elementary school and for an entire week we celebrated the different elements/aspects of our beautiful state, Kansas.

I had no idea until I left college and joined the real world with others from around the US, that we are one of the few states that celebrates our state. Blasphemy!!!! Every year growing up we would celebrate the 'birth' of Kansas for an entire week that would culminate with a birthday party with treats for all. It's hard to believe she's already 150 (January 29th, 1861 - and Kansas State University was founded two years later on February 16th, in case you didn't realize)! (She looks so young!)
The art projects were the best. I remember the pictures of buffalos that we decorated with different colors of brown, including coffee grounds to make their darker wool. We colored sunflowers, meadowlarks, and box turtles, Oh My! The week would typically end with a delicious cup of Kansas Dirt (Chocolate pudding and crushed oreos on top) and maybe a showing of Wizard of Oz.

I find it so hard to believe, and a little bit sad, that my friends from other states don't know their state's history. Is Kansas that proud? Is it our education standards? Or is it because I grew up in a small town? Either way, I feel very fortunate to know and celebrate my state's birthday! In the last few years, I have also noticed that KSU tends to play KU on this day as well to really get in to the spirit of Kansas (State). At, least, I can only assume that right?

So here's to you Kansas and my fellow Kansans. Go State!!!

PS - On a (even more) fun note: "Home on the Range" was written by Dr. Brewster Higley at the Higley Cabin, located 5 miles NorthEast of Kensington. And the geographical center of the United States of America is located in Lebanon, KS which is located 30 miles east of Kensington.

PPS - I apologize for the layout. I'm still getting used to this blogging business.

We're heading towards our coldest days of Winter yet...

That's what I heard on the news tonight....awesome.
It's crazy what a difference a week can make. And I'm not even talking about the weather. Although I'm soooo excited for the return of the temps of "Feels Like -10". Just kidding! How awful!!!

Regardless of the weather turning (or, staying) cold and blah, my mood and outlook have increased exponentially! I cannot even explain it but I'm just happy that my usually jovial personality and outlook have returned. I even notice myself replacing every other exclamation point with a period so I'm not a huge creep. Whoopsie!

Anyway, I realized last Friday that I needed an attitude adjustment and no one can do that except for little ol me! There are so many great and happy things in this world. And although I claimed that nothing great was happening in my life, I couldn't be more wrong! I have a nice apartment, a warm bed, and a full closet (and belly - Ha!). My friends and family are loving and supportive and I really can't complain, so I apologize for doing so.

I finally made it back to the treadmill tonight and the endorphins are kicking in already! Here's my pledge to keep it up and to make it to church this weekend, since I didn't make it last week.

Coasting through life

I was talking to a friend today and I realized that it's not that things in my life are going wrong, but it feels like things in my life aren't going right either. I am coasting through life. I realize that only I can make something happen, but what if I don't even know the direction to move in?

Is this just the norm at this stage in our life? I'm five years out of college/in the career world and I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. The majority of my college friends are married. Some of them are either looking or already living in their second home. Some of them are talking about kids or currently pregnant, while others already have two children! I am still single and wasting money by paying rent. I see no reason to buy a place when I don't even know where I want to be.

I love living in Chicago and being able to do whatever I want, whenever I want but I feel like I'm so behind in the game of life, compared to all of my friends. I also realize it's not smart to compare yourself....

So anyway, I'm not sure about the goal for this post, but hey! This is my second post this week! I'm impressed with myself. And the blog title is Milestones and Meltdowns and it appears this is a meltdown! :)

Here's to 2011

Like many other 'bloggers' as myself, I have decided today that 2011 is going to be devoted to a better understanding of myself. My first New Year's resolution to help in this journey is to go to church on a regular basis. Hopefully that means every week, but currently on week two of 2011, I'm 1 for 2. I did find a church down the street (.7 miles) so it's a nice little walk for a Sunday, or Saturday evening if I must. The preist spoke English and gave a decent message today so I think I'm in luck! And, they have multiple mass options on Saturday and Sunday so I really won't have many chances to not make it.

I think writing out feelings and thoughts can also help in this journey, so *hopefully* I will do a better job of writing on here. I would like to get a better understanding of what makes me happy, in terms of my career and how to get there.

The last six months have been a journey in itself. I am getting a better understanding of what I want and need in life as well as what I don't like and what I don't want. I need to learn how to better vocalize these thoughts and feelings so I get where I want to be with my career and love life. Here's to 2011 and whatever may come my way.

Why Chicago???

As some of you may know, my time of living in the great state of Kansas, has come to an end. And my weekends of being semi-homeless are almost over. The majority of my belongings are securely (hopefully) stored in south Kansas City and will be making the move North to Illinois in less than three weeks. Chicago, to be more exact, and Printer's Row, to be more specific. I've been having a variation of this plan for the past year and it's become more real as of December or January when everything was falling in to place. And ever since then, I've been asked the question, "Why Chicago?" Listed below are a few reasons....

1) City Life I suppose some people, like my mother, feel that Kansas City is the big city, but I just don't feel this way. Our downtown has hardly any tall buildings - we have different neighborhoods, but each one is a variation of the next one. Chicago, on the other hand has a plethora of 'hoods.

2) Public transportation I love the idea of not dealing with parking, and letting someone else 'drive' me around the city.

3) Shopping This should actually be a reason to not move so I won't shop as much...Michigan Ave. and State St. Shopping are a short 15 min walk away....

4) Food Another reason I should avoid the move! There are so many restaurants that only the great ones make it.

5) Midwest Chicago is the New York City of the Midwest...it's cleaner, it's more friendly, and it's not overwhelmingly huge.

6) Lake Michigan There's a beach!!!

7) Diversity I'm planning on attending the Armenian festival in August in hopes of meeting a Kardashian for myself...or maybe I'll hang out in Greek Town to find my own Kostas??

8) The Skyline I love the view from my future 22nd floor apartment in South Loop. We have a fabulous view of the former Sears Tower and the Hancock building, and we can even see Lake Michigan from our balcony.

9) Walking It's great exercise and you can walk to virtually anything you may need!!! (Including Target!!!)

10) Easy Southwest Flights from KC I love visitors!!! and There's an Orange Line within walking distance!

11) Strangers My friend Alex always says "Stranger Danger" and although she makes a great point...I am so excited to live in a city where I hardly know anyone!!! Call me crazy but I think it's so exciting!!!

12) Sports teams Although I'll be farther away from my Wildcats, I can't say that I've ever had any sort of love for the Royals or the Chiefs, but I can already see myself becoming a Huge Cubs and Bears fan. Heck, I've even started following the Blackhawks!!

All in all, I'm so excited for this new chapter in my life to begin. If you ever find yourself in the Windy City, or needing a fun place to visit, please let me know!!!!

Meatloaf

Ok - so as I'm sure the suspense is killing you all, my first blog is not going to tell the tale of one of my favorite meaty dishes growing up (ironically enough, my good friend Stephanie recently did blog about Meatloaf), but I am going to divulge a few of the reasons why I shy away from those furry little kanines. Don't get me wrong, I've dabbled a bit in the pet world, but more often than not, I don't have to do much for them to sustain their existance. For example, my first pet was a baby painted turtle named Minature Matilda. She was precious. And based on pictures from the past, there was more than one, but I can't remember his/her name. We had a few parakeets in the Beckman household as well. Luckily for me, Zoe and Zeke were kept in the dining room, on the opposite side of our house from where I laid my head down to sleep, so I was rarely bothered by them. And although I cleaned his cage every now and again, more often than not, Momma Jo usually cleaned it out. My brother Nick had a few anoles (fake Chameleons) when we were younger but they were downstairs and I rarely did anything with them. Except that one time I lifted the lid to look in to their aquarium and I thought he was going to scurry out so I slammed the lid shut. On his tail. Which caused his tail to fall off. They don't grow back. (If I never apologized for that Nick, or fessed up to it, it was me, and I apologize.) All in all, these animals could fit in the palm of your hand and didn't need a lot of attention.

I enjoyed our neighbors dogs, Taffy and Keisha, except for that one day I was out behind the house on a sweltering summer day and I thought Taffy looked thirsty. However, she didn't act like she understood what the big water trough was for, so I took matters in my own hand by giving her head a little 'tap tap' into the water. It must have been more of a shove though, because before I knew it I heard a growl and I took off running. She was a little faster and tackled me to the ground and bit my ear. I eventually forgave her and my ear healed just fine. I didn't really enjoy either dog after that...

I was involved in 4-H for about 10 years and the majority of those years, I had a market lamb, or two, that I took care of from April through July. I enjoyed the sheep so much that if I wasn't walking them around town, I was reading books to them. Actually, I only read to them once, but they did listen, and they did enjoy it. I got along with my sheep pretty well on most occasions, but they stayed outside and kept to themselves. There was that one time during the fair that I took one for a walk and he took off running and I didn't want to let go of the lead rope...so he dragged me a couple of yards down the street. I made it out alive, but my knee still shows the battle wound from that day.

Ok, so there you have the annals of my pet past. Now, to the inspiration for my blog...After a treacherous week of working long hours, and barely getting the 'permission' to go to NYC, I arrive at La Guardia Airport in NY, NY, find my way to baggage claim, hop in a cab to Park Slope in Brooklyn, and arrive to Sarah's quaint little 387 sq.ft. apartment she shares with Milo, or as Sarah affectionately calls him, Meatloaf. Her 9 month old Maltese.

Milo and I have had a sordid past. He's cute, like most dogs, from a distance. But once he starts jumping on your leg, biting at your pants, or your hand that is inadvertently trying to 'bat' him away and protect yourself, that's not so cute. I spent a weekend with Milo back in October while Sarah had to go out of town. I really feel like we bonded and we could co-exist always. I even thought maybe this whole pet thing wasn't so bad. It could be nice to have a little friend. Well, let's fast forward 4 months and a new city and a smaller apartment. Oh, and he no longer gets kanine interaction since he's no longer enrolled in doggie daycare. So as soon as he hears movement on the stairs he's scratching and springing at the door!Milo has grown since the last time I saw him, as has his athletic abilities. He can jump higher and run faster than ever before. Sometimes I worry that his heart is going to explode from beating so fast because he gets so excited! This 'child' does not like to settle down, especially at bedtime. We had the window open in the apartment to let fresh air in, but that also includes noise from the cars driving by, people yelling outside, sirens from the nearby hospital going off and Milo likes to let everyone know that he hears all of this as well. Milo also likes to lick. Everything. I'm told this is a sign of love, but I really don't translate it to be that. So as Sarah and I settle down for bed the first night, we can only assume Milo is just as tired. WRONG! He thinks it would be more fun to run around the apartment, scratch at the rug, attempt to lick my face or jump on the bed to walk all over us. Needless to say, Sarah and I didn't get more than an hour of sleep the entire night and we both had to work in the morning. To add to my distaste for Milo, I am left at home with him that next day. He decides to be a calm little puppie that almost makes you like him again and think he's fun to have around. He would scoot next to me on the couch and fall asleep cuddled up next to me. What's going on?? I tried to sleep last night, yet he chose to keep us awake so I decided I wasn't going to let him sleep either. Throughout the morning I found myself ruffling him and talking to him to make sure he could still hear all the commontion outside the window. I was merely trying to keep him 'in the know' like he did for me the night before.

So eventually, I decide maybe it would be nice of me to take Milo outside so he can relieve himself. He doesn't always get a chance to do this during the day, so I thought this would be a nice treat for him. We make it down the four flights of stairs and outside for him to visit each of his favorite trees. I was pretty sure that he couldn't have anything else in his bladder so we turn around and head back to the apartment. I settle back in to my work while Milo goes back to his 'business,' and by business, I wish I meant paperwork. Milo gives a little bark that I ignore and then all of a sudden a nasty stench wafts up to my nose. I get up to check out the other side of the coffee table where Milo had been sitting. Yes, Milo decided it would be more fun to do his 'business' in the comfort of his own home, rather than outdoors with the rest of God's friendly creatures.

I can get past the jumping, biting, and licking, but the constant need for attention coupled with the freedom of their bodily functions are too much to handle.
Alright, my first blog is getting a bit lengthy, but this pet buisness is clearly not in my near future.
